Bedroom Tidying & Nostalgia

/ On : 3:34 PM/ Thank you for visiting my small blog here. If you wanted to discuss or have the question around this article, please contact me e-mail at herdiansyah hamzah@yahoo.com.
I think for the first time in my whole life, I actually enjoyed tidying my room! I literally never thought this day would come, but here it is.

My room gets well beyond messy. I never throw anything away and I literally keep the smallest things because I love nostalgia and just general memories. Every time I tidy my room, I know it should only take an hour or two, but it always ends up taking a couple of days because I always find an old book that I once read as a child, something I got at Christmas like a puzzle or some mind game thing or just old Christmas/Birthday/Post cards!

My love of memories is shown all over my notice board (which I will have to get a photograph of to put on here). I have all sorts of things from all sorts of places. I have old gig tickets. I have old notes from secondary school. I have posters from things that my old bands played at. I have loads of different ribbons and beads. I have little doodles. Just all sorts of things that remind me of my friends and things that I have done with them or been given by them.

I think my favourite thing about finding stuff in my room is that I can pretty much remember exactly what was happening when I was given it, found it or, to be a little more general, it came into my life.

I think one of my favourite things to repeatedly find is a copy of a book I received from my Grandparents when they were still together and my Grandad was still alive. I was basically really into dinosaurs when I was younger, and they got me a personalised book about me going on a journey through time to the land of the dinosaurs. Every time I come across this again, I end up sitting and reading it before I can carry on!

Back on the main reason(s) for this; I found some post cards from years ago from some of my oldest friends, and some cards from a much more recent time.

The first card doesn't have a date so I'll post that. It's pretty old though:

This is a postcard from my oldest friend, Ricky. I think my favourite thing about it is probably just how general yet somehow detailed it is. I always thought the idea of a postcard was to let friends and family know how you're doing and what you've been up to, where as Ricky has used it as an opportunity to describe his house! If you knew Ricky, I think you'd probably appreciate how funny the fact that it is really formal is.

This next postcard is one I received from another one of my oldest friends, Fred. It was when he went to Cornwall in 2002:

This one makes me smile mainly because of Fred calling me 'Patch'. I'm not quite sure where that one started, although when I was younger, I did have to wear an eye patch for a while (arrrrggg). I love that it has everything a holiday in England has, mainly, just doing things that you could do at home, but somewhere else.

This is another postcard from Fred. This is when he went to Australia in 2004:

I really love the 'No worries mate!' part. I don't know why he said it and I've asked him a couple of times and it still remains a mystery. I laugh out loud every time I read 'Aussie land' as well because I can really hear it being said in my head. I wish my friends would go away sometimes and send me postcards.

Now on to the more recent nostalgia. How long ago do you count as recent? I suppose that might be a couple of years or something. Well not quite, it was actually this year but it still made me smile a bunch. This is a card from when I was in hospital briefly on painkillers with some perverted 50 year old man in the best across the room watching my every move, although that's one for another time. This is the card I received from Holli's Mum, Jacky:

This post card is literally packed full to the brim with banter! My favourite part was Holli's confusion at the McDonald's reference, I love that I can have an in joke with her Mum and it be totally acceptable! I love the picture so much as well, I don't know why but it just makes me feel really optimistic. I don't know what towards but who cares? This is nostalgia for the sake of nostalgia. Also, this card came with the most cliché but appreciated hospital gift of grapes! Good times.

This is a card from the same time in hospital; from Holli, the daughter of the aforementioned Jacky:

Everything about this card is so 'Holli', I don't think I need to say anything else about it!

I don't think anything beats the feeling of a good nostalgia session! I think it's ruined a little bit by knowing that I'm likely to spend the rest of the day finishing my room though. Feels bad.
