Born to V R S Chakrabarty and Jaya, Hema Malini has become an exponent of Bharatnatyam dance at an early age and showed her skill in a Telugu film Pandava Vanavasam in 1961. Her debut Hindi film in 1968 opposite Raj Kapoor Sapnon ka Saudagar flopped, but she survived.
The most beautiful face was immediately noticed and Hema Malini rose to stardom with Dev Anand’s Johny Mera Naam in 1970. She did not look back after it and her stocks went higher and higher. She has the distinction of playing Bollywood’s first female double role in Seeta Aur Geeta with Dharmendra and Sanjeev Kumar in 1972. She won the Filmfare Best Actress Award for the film.

Those who used to dismiss Hema Malini as one-tone heroine, the talkative ‘Tanga driver’ in all-time classic Sholay in 1975 came as an eye opener.
Hema Malini also showed her acting talent playing a landowner’s scheming mistress in Lal Pathhar , a young widow in Andaaz (both 1971) and Gulzar’s memorable films Khusboo ( 1975), Kinara ( (1977) and Meera ( 1979). She continued her dominance till the mid 1980s with numerous Super hits like Jugnu, Joshila, Charas, Kasauti, Sanyasi , Trishul, The Burning Train, Razia Sultan, Aas Paas and Rehaii. In her current avatar as a senior’s role, she won the Star Screen Best Actress Award for Bhagban in 2004.
Hema Malini was nominated for the Filmfare Best Actress Award for ten times from 1974 to 2004. In 1999,she got Filmfare Life Time Achievement Award. She was conferred Padma Shri in 2000. In 2004, she was given the Living Legend Award by the Federation of Indian Chamber of Commerce and Industry. In 2007, the Bangkok Film Festival screened some of her films as a tribute to the actress. Married to Superstar Dharmendra, Hema Malini is presently a Member of Parliament.
