This is the second part of the 'Bands & Musicians I Have Discovered or Rediscovered This Year'. I think I'm probably going to post another entry today about my new haircut though. I bloody do love it!
Laura Marling
She has had one hell of a year if I'm right. 'I Speak Because I Can' has been nominated for all sorts and she's been getting recognition left, right & centre. I'm a much bigger fan of the songs from her first album though. I'm not usually really into all of that folky stuff but she's got a really nice voice and the songs just sound so perdy. Maybe one day I'll get to #1 in the NME cool list, but then again.
Favourite Songs: Ghosts, Rambling Man.
The Maccabees
I'd always avoided this band purely because of the name. It's just such a trendy sounding name. I'm glad I've started listening to them now though after Toby put one of their songs on the band's newly proposed set list. The guitar work is so tasty and everything is mega catchy. I just wish the singer didn't sound as though he was going to have an emotional breakdown at any second.
Favourite Songs: X-Ray, Latchmere.
Peaches
I had never heard of Peaches before an inevitably hilarious night at Marc's with him and John! I bought the album and have been living it up ever since. Fuck The Pain Away reminds me quite a lot of being in hospital also because it was all I listened to! Good times. It's all pretty simple and dancey but so fun and unnecessarily obscene! I love it!
Favourite Songs: Fuck The Pain Away, Diddle My Skittle.
Placebo
I had heard of Placebo and heard quite a lot of their songs and thought they were pretty cool (from having 'Kerrang!' and their 'endlessly changing' play list of videos - sarcasm, if you couldn't tell). But I got all of their albums except the newest and I think they are brilliant. I'm a bigger fan of the earlier stuff but it's all good! I don't even know what it is I like about them.
Favourite Songs: 36 Degrees, Spite & Malice.
Queens of the Stone Age
This is less of a discovery of the band so much as realising that I really think I don't like them. I bought 'Songs For The Death' ages ago and that was a pretty good album, but listening to their other albums, I just was thinking, "I really don't like this, like at all." It really confused me. I suppose they have their moments though. I feel kind of band for including this. I think I just don't like Josh Homme's voice much.
Favourite Songs: Feel Good Hit Of The Summer, Go With The Flow.
The Rapture
Any one who knows the TV show 'Misfits' will know this band from the theme song. I have never watched Misfits but I've heard it's pretty good, I guess, so please don't talk to me about it. The Rapture is just really cool offensively sharp guitar parts with some crazed indie kids screaming stuff! It makes me want to smash something up and then cower in a corner somewhere.
Favourite Songs: Echoes, House Of Jealous Lovers.
*Shels
I borrowed 'Sea Of The Dying Dhow' from John ages ago and I loved it. My idiotic computer it was on died (not at all my fault for not backing anything up at the time) and I never got round to getting a copy again. That reminds me, I need to get the Angelic Process stuff again. They were good times. I got a copy of *Shels' 'Laurnetian's Atoll' and thoroughly enjoyed it!
Favourite Songs: Indian (Part 2), In Dead Palm Fields.
Sonic Youth
Rob showed me 'My Friend Goo' a bunch of times and it is the most stupid song I have ever heard. The song is cool but the lyrics suck, although I do love Thurston Moore's lack of wanting to say his lines. He also showed me Incinerate, which is much better. The girl in the band basically sucks (no not that, just generally) and the guy is good.
Favourite Songs: Incinerate, My Friend Goo.
t.A.T.u.
Do you remember those Russian lesbians singing that 'All The Things She Said' song? Why do I bother? Of course you do! Everyone does! It was probably the best video ever! They were just getting covered in rain and getting off! Plus the redheaded one was probably the first ginger I ever found attractive! I didn't realise when I originally had the album, I didn't realise 'How Soon Is Now' was a cover of The Smiths' song!
Favourite Songs: All The Things She Said, Not Gonna Get Us.
Villagers
I am subscribed to a Youtube channel called watchlistentell, which basically has a bunch of videos of bands playing their songs acoustic. I found a good Bombay Bicycle Club song on their page and so I watched the other videos. In amongst them was a song by Villagers. It's the same place I found out about Lucy Rose too! I really suggest subscribing!
Favourite Songs: Becoming A Jackal, Pieces.
