She was born into a traditional south Indian family but the family was liberal to permit Aishwarya Rai to join modeling at a young age. She was awarded with the Filmfare Best Actress Award for her radiant performance in the film. The another movie Taal (1999) became a huge commercially successful film establishing her as one of the pre-eminent ladies in Bollywood. This very film also earn for her a second Filmfare nomination in the same year.

Her following cinemas like the Devdas, item number in 'Bunty & Bubbly’ has mesmerized the Indian audience in general sending waves of rhythm across the nation. Her escalating fame has brought her to the international fore and has been signified as the embodiment of the ideal Indian beauty. It was due to her elegance in the film ‘Devdas’ that it earned a special screening at the year's (2002-2003) Cannes Film Festival and created history in the box-office records both in India and the United States. She adorned the seat of a member of the jury at the Cannes Film Festival being the first Indian actor. In addition she graced the covers of India Today and the prestigious TIME Magazine. The Time Magazine listed her once on their list of the "100 Most Influential People in the World Today".

On 20 April, 2007 she married the Bollywood celebrity Abhishek Bachchan, son of the first family of the Indian movie industry and the son of the actor duo, the legendary Amitabh Bacchan and Jaya Bhaduri, the veteran actress.
